Bath and kitchen mosaics: art and tradition

Mosaic coverings have always been part of our live and, since ancient times, they have been used as decorative and distinctive elements in patrician houses, even though their original function was to protect the underlying substrate. They have come to the present day through various artistic reinterpretations and obviously the natural evolution of bathroom coverings has been influenced by this centuries-old tradition, given the fact that there is an extremely vast offer of mosaic coverings of every size and color. Glass mosaics, glass paste, stoneware, natural stone, wood and plastic polymers are now commonly used in different areas, as they enrich the spaces with new expressive capabilities.

In fact, modern mosaic tiles offer a fantastic opportunity to customize your house by combining tradition and modernity, adding an artistic touch to the walls.

The mix of practicality, durability and beauty of these mosaics transforms them into real pieces of furniture, which are able to decorate entire walls as well as small portions of them, relying on a wide range of different colors, materials and sizes.

Bath mosaics

Among the places in the house where it is easier to imagine and to find a mosaic, there is undoubtedly the bathroom where, thanks to plays of light and colors, you can create unique atmospheres. The very nature of wall mosaics, which consists of the application of tiles with different dimensions that can vary from about 0.5 x 0.5 cm to 5 x 5 cm on specific nets, allows to obtain always different aspects depending on the colors and materials which are used. Therefore, there are extremely refined mosaics, that are made of tone-on-tone micro tiles, while others are cheerful and gorgeous, with colorful and shiny tiles.

Given the many solutions and available patterns, we suggest starting from the color, and only then focus on the material and the size of the individual tiles. In small bathrooms, light shades and colors help to make the room look bigger, while strong colors should be used to define details or to emphasize bathroom fixtures with particular shapes.

The choice of the material is closely related with the style of the whole bathroom: glass and marble are generally used in classic bathrooms, while recycled plastic, porcelain stoneware or resin are indicated for a more modern taste. This is obviously not a rule, and nothing prevents you from mixing different materials and styles, as well as opting for geometric patterns instead of classic solid colors.

Kitchen mosaics

The kitchen is the second room in which it is easier to find mosaic coverings. The advent of new materials such as stoneware and resin for the creation of mosaics, has made it possible to use these tiles even in those more delicate areas such as the backsplash. The availability of nearly infinite shapes and colors makes it very easy to find the right covering to match your kitchen, whatever color or style you have opted for.

From cement tiles mosaics, to brick effect ones, from colored glass paste mosaics to marble tiles, all these solutions are characterized by a great ease of cleaning, although you must pay attention to the joints. We always recommend the use of epoxy grouts and non-cementitious ones, in order to facilitate cleaning.

But not only baths and kitchens

Natural stone or stoneware mosaics also lends themselves to being installed on the floor and, even though shower trays are the most common destination, there are also stone mosaics that can be installed outdoors to create suggestive walkable areas in gardens or home entrances.
